services conducted at Mill Funeral Home in Eagle Lake, he was buried in the Wharton
City Cemetery on November 19, 1948. He was survived by his parents (each of whom
are now buried near him), two sisters, Mrs. W. C. Dixon and Melba Lou New, and three
brothers, Alton, Leland, and Truett.51
Pvt. Marion Dennis Jackson
May 20, 1918 - March 23, 1944
Marion Dennis Jackson, the son of Henderson and Sylvia Dennis Jackson,
was born at Gay Hill on May 20, 1918. On December 10, 1938, he married Marthy Winn.
He served in the 701st Chemical Company. He died March 23, 1944, and was buried
in an American military cemetery in Italy, indicating that he probably died in that country.
His death is listed by the War Department as a non-battle death. For a time after the war,
Columbus had a black chapter of the American Legion named the Marion D. Jackson
Chapter, Post 383. Despite the honor thereby bestowed upon him, little else is known
of Jackson or the circumstances of his death.52
Capt. Frank P. Blassingame
Died 1944
All that is known of Frank Blassingame, who was the highest ranking-officer
among the men listed on the courthouse plaque, is that he was apparently killed in the
fighting around Rome in 1944, buried in a cemetery at Nettuno, right above Anzio Beach,
and later reinterred in Texas. No connection to Colorado County has been made. The
Colorado County courthouse apparently contains no record of anyone by the name of
Blassingame who was ever born, died, got married, owned land, or went to school in
the county. Truly, if he was from Colorado County, he left indistinct footprints.53
Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class Frederick Eilert Pawelek
June 21, 1921 - May 29, 1944
Frederick Eilert Pawelek, the son of Herman Pawelek, was born on June 21,
1921 at East Bernard, Texas. However, he was living in the New Bielau area when the
war broke out. Pawelek, who initially served on board the U. S. S. Shubrick in the
Atlantic, was serving as a gunner's mate on an unidentified vessel in the Pacific,
stationed at a 40-mm. machine gun anti-aircraft battery, when the ship was attacked by
51 Eagle Lake Headlight, October 8, 1948, November 26, 1948. New's gravestone states,
incorrectly, that he died in 1943.
52 Colorado County Birth Records, vol. 12, p. 492; Colorado County Marriage Records, vol. 5, p.
277; Colorado County Citizen, November 1, 1945. Jackson's first name was recorded as Ulysses on his birth
certificate. Other evidence suggests that Jackson died in 1945. The Veterans Administration gives the date
as March 1, 1945. The records of the Rome Cemetery, where he is buried, give it as March 20, 1945.
53 It has been suggested that Blassingame might have been from Wharton County, since a family
by that name was involved for many years in Wharton County Junior College and in medicine in that county;
however, no connection with Captain Frank Blassingame has been discovered.132
